Middle Creek Farm is a SilvoCulture project several years in the making. Situated among the beautiful rolling hills of farms and forest to the west of Frederick, this property has a beautiful diversity of habitats, including open fields of mixed grasses and pollinators, upland forest, riparian forest, and Middle Creek running alongside it all. Swales have been added to the higher parts of the property to help sink water into the earth for trees downhill. A diversity of nuts and fruits have been planted such as chestnuts, pecans, black walnuts, oaks, apples, pawpaws, persimmons, aronia, goumi, elderberry, and pears. Middle Creek Farm hosted a series of workshops in 2019 creating some wonderful projects on the property to be enjoyed, such as a willow temple, insect habitat wall, and earthern oven. In 2020, SilvoCulture continued to build community at Middle Creek Farm by hosting the Chestnut Immersion Workshop and Hickory Oil Pressing Day. Multiple possibilities exist for this farm’s future – education, production, and more SilvoCulture projects – stay tuned to hear more!
